Looking towards
the Risca Pit which extended between Crosskeys and
Wattsville.
This area of land is now known as the Blackvein
Industrial Estate
Bottom left is the Sirhowy River and elevated above it
the original road leading from
Crosskeys to Wattsville. The tall building to the left
was the Screens and Washeries where
the coal was graded and washed.
Background: Mynydd y Lan Shafts were first sunk in 1875 and
the pit was fully operational in 1878.
An explosion occured on the 15th July 1880 resulting in
the death of 120 men and boys.
The Colliery was
closed by the National Coal Board in July 1966
